Softball Sweeps Rebel Games Doubleheader

Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 10, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team recorded a sweep in its opening day of action at the Rebel Spring Games, defeating Tiffin University 6-2 in game one before coming from behind to beat Southwest Minnesota State University in a seventh inning walk-off victory, 4-3.
The Pioneers improve to 3-0 overall.
In game one, junior
Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y.) earned the victory in the circle with five innings, allowing one earned run on six hits. Sophomore
Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) threw two innings in relief, holding the Dragons to one run.
A leadoff homerun by freshman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) put the Pioneers on top from the get-go. Junior
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) jacked a two-run shot in the fourth. The Dragons scored in the fifth, but the Pioneers tacked on three mor eruns in the sixth as Gonzalez drove in another run and sophomore
Aly Dzierzynski (Deerk Park, N.Y.) drove in two runs with a single to center.
In the second game, Pioneers were tied at one through five innings courtesty of an LIU Post run in the second on a Palmeri sacrifice fly, but SMSU took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth as they got to Ehlinger for two runs
But the resilient Pioneers tied it at 3-3 on Palmeri's two run single, andin the seventh, with two outs and runers on first and second, freshman
Dana Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) came through with a single in her first collegiate plate appearance, giving the Pioneers the walk-off victory and making a winner of Ehlinger.
Freshman
Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.) led the Pioneers at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Freshman
Paige Swantekn, N.Y. (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished 3-for-4, while Palmeri had three RBI.
The Pioneers continue Rebel Games action tomorrow, with a matchup against Minnesota State University -Mankato at 9a.m., followed by another contest against Southwest Minnesota at 11 a.m.
