KISSIMMEE, FLA. (March 14, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team picked up a walk-off win in the second game of the day, beating Augustana College 2-1 after falling in the first game 4-0 to Minnesota State University – Mankato.

LIU Post is now holding a 5-4 record on the season.

In game one, freshman Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) made her first start in the circle for the Pioneers sitting down the first three batters she faced.  The Pioneers threatened in the top of the second inning, with sophomore Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park,N.Y.) starting the inning off with a single to right field.  Freshman Paige Swantek (Smithwon, N.Y.) followed with a single to left giving LIU Post runners on first and second with nobody out.  Mankato's Courtney McKelvogue then got the next three Pioneers to go down in order to end the threat.

The Mavericks jumped on the board in the bottom half of the second when an Abby Sonner single scored Samantha Holien who had led off the inning with a double down the left field line.  MSU tacked on another run in the fourth when a Pioneer throwing error allowed pinch runner Laura Milligan to score.  Milligan took over on second base for Lindsay Erickson who led off the fourth inning with a single.

The Pioneers' defense unraveled in the sixth inning, making three errors that allowed the Mavericks to score two more runs bringing the score to 4-0.  The Pioneers' offense was held quiet throughout the morning, only registering four hits with two coming off the bat of Swantek.

Lewis went the distance in the circle, pitching six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two.

McKelvogue improved to 8-3 with her complete game shutout.

In game two, both teams were held scoreless through three full innings. In the top of the fourth, Augustana's Jenny Brown reached base as a result of a Pioneer mistake and came around to score two batters later when Lindsay Spanton singled to center field.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, LIU Post evened the score at one.  Dzierzynski walked to lead off the inning and moved to second two batters later when Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) came on to pinch run for Dzierzynski, and freshman Dana Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) came through with a single through the left side plating Julich.

The Pioneers finished the game in walk-off fashion.  The first two batters were retired before junior Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drew a walk.  Junior Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) then came to the plate and knocked a double to right center scoring Gonzalez from first to end the game by a score of 2-1.
Weber finished the game 2-for-2, while Moss, Swantek, Hagenah, Gonzalez, Hopkins, and Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) each added a hit apiece.
Weber (3-3) also took the win in the circle, firing a complete game three-hitter allowing just one run while striking out seven.

Jenelle Trautmann was saddled with her third loss of the season (6-3), pitching six and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts.

The Pioneers finish their Florida trip Saturday, March 16 as they face Wayne State at 9 a.m. and Northwood at 1 p.m.
