Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, CONN. (March 26, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team used two late inning rallies to post a pair of victories over Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action, winning game one 4-2, and earning the eight-inning victory in game two, 7-3.
The Pioneers improve to 11-4 with the sweep.
In the first game, junior pitcher
Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tossed a complete game, limiting the Owls to only one earned run on five hits, striking out two batters. The game was scoreless after four, with the Pioneers taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth as
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) jacked a two-run shot over the center field fence.
Southern Connecticut pushed across a run in the fifth, and tied the game with another run in the sixth, and the game was tied heading into the seventh.
But Weber helped her own cause with a two-out double in the top of the inning, and after Gonzalez worked a walk, junior
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) ripped a double to right field to drive in both runners.
The Owls put two on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Weber got a groundout to shortstop for the final out of the game.
Weber and Hagenah each had three hits for the Pioneers in game one of the twinbill.
In game two, the Pioneers once again took the first lead of the game, scoring two in the third on a two-run single through the left side by Hagenah.
But Southern Connecticut stormed back in the bottom of the inning as they scored three runs on a single, a sacrifice fly, and an infield error.
The Pioneers tied it in the fourth as junior
Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) singled with one out, moved to second on a bunt, advanced to third on a Gonzalez single through the left side, and scored when Hagenah was hit by a pitch.
After seven innings, the game was still tied at three, but in the eighth, the Pioneers put up a big inning as Weber was once again the late-inning catalyst with a one-out single. Gonzalez followed with her second homer of the afternoon, and after Hagenah worked a walk, sophomore
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) belted a round-tripper of her own to give the Pioneers a 7-3 lead.
Freshman pitcher
Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) set down the Owls in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory in relief of sophomore
Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Ehlinger tossed three innings and gave up two earned on six hits. Lewis came in and was solid with five innings of shutout relief, allowing only four hits.
Offensively, five Pioneers had two hits apiece, while Hagenah drove in three runners and Dzierzynski knocked in two.
Next on the slate for the Pioneers is a doubleheader against Stonehill on Thursday, March 28, starting at 2 p.m.
