(April 17, 2013) – The Pioneers rallied from a 6-0 deficit to top the visiting Adelphi Panthers in dramatic fashion with a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth. Adelphi came out swinging, scoring four runs in the top of the first. After adding two more in the third, reliever Brandon Kruel came in and shut down the Panthers' offense. The Pioneers broke through for their first run in the fifth when Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) singled through the left side of the infield to score Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) In the sixth, LIU Post's comeback was in full swing. After Iacono drove in Angel Pimentel (New York, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly, Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) crushed a three-run homer to pull the Pioneers within one at 6-5. John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) singled through a drawn in infield to plate Pimentel to tie it in the eighth. With two outs in the ninth, Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error and was able to advance to second. The Panthers intentionally walked Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y), brining Pimentel to the plate with the winning run at second. He wasted no time, smacking the first pitch into the gap in left-center to bring home Carona with the winning run. The Pioneers mobbed him as he rounded second and the celebration began. Kruel worked six scoreless innings to get the win, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out one. Next up for the Pioneers is an East Coast Conference matchup with St. Thomas Aquinas on April 19. Print Friendly Version
