Baseball Drops Opener With Dowling, 5-4

Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 26, 2013) – The Pioneers rallied late but couldn't complete the comeback against the Golden Lions of Dowling in their series opener in Brookville on Friday. Dowling took game one of the four-game set, 5-4.
 
The loss drops the Pioneers to 13-23 on the season and 5-12 in ECC play.
 
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first by taking advantage of an error by Dowling starter Tyler Badamo. With two on, Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) laid down a sac-bunt and the throw was wild, allowing Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) and Casey McKay (North Massapequa, N.Y.) to score.
 
Dowling answered with two in the second and two in the third and pushed one across in the eighth to go ahead 5-2.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, the Pioneers mounted a comeback when Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) singled up the middle to score Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) to make it 5-3.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, John Bellock () came home to score on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 5-4 but the Pioneers couldn't bring the tying run home from third.
 
Chris Anderson took the loss in a 7 1/3-inning effort, allowing three earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out one.
 
The Pioneers and Golden Lions resume their series on Saturday with a doubleheader.
