BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 26, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over neighbor New York Institute of Technology Friday afternoon at the Softball Complex.  The Pioneers took game one 12-0 before completing the sweep with a 5-0 win in game two.

With the sweep, LIU Post improves to 42-11 including 23-3 in ECC play, while NYIT slides to 13-29 overall and 7-19 in conference action.

In game one, pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) tossed a complete game shutout for her 21st win of the season.  The junior allowed just six hits and one walk while fanning seven over the five innings of play.  Weber was also a force at the plate, as she was one of six Pioneers to finish the game with two hits.

The Pioneers got started with four runs in the first off five hits.  Freshman Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) capped off the scoring with a two RBI double to right center to score junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) and freshman second baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.).

In the third, LIU Post added another three runs on three consecutive at bats.  Swantek and freshman third baseman Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.) drilled back-to-back singles to left field plating Dzierzynski and Palmeri, respectively.  Swantek scored in the next at bat when sophomore right fielder Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice.

The Pioneers then exploded for five runs in the fourth on seven hits.  Junior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) singled in junior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to start the scoring and two batters later Palmeri doubled to right field to score Hagenah.  Two batters later freshman Dana Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) came up with a pinch hit single to left center plating pinch runner Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.). Another run came in on a fielder's choice, and Weber capped off the scoring with an RBI single to left center.

The Pioneers' game two starter Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) held the Bears scoreless as well, scattering five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first two and one-half innings until the Pioneers put up a three spot in the bottom of the third.  Hagenah knocked in two runs on a double down the left field line, and Dzierzynski followed with an RBI single to center field.

Weber added two runs in the bottom of the sixth with a blast over the fence in right center field with pinch runner Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) aboard.

Weber finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Hagenah and Dzierzynski each finished 2-for-3, and Hagenah added two RBI.

The Pioneers close out their regular season play tomorrow with a road doubleheader at Queens College starting at noon.
