Softball's Season Ends With 5-4 Loss To New Haven During NCAA East Regional

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 12, 2013) – Despite scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the LIU Post softball team could not complete the comeback over the University of New Haven during the NCAA Division II East Region game five. The final score was 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
New Haven improved its record to 38-14 overall and advanced to face Adelphi University later in the championship game. LIU Post ended its season with a 47-15 overall record.
The Chargers scored all five of their runs over the first four innings of play. First baseman Jess Spivey hit an RBI single down the left field line for the first run of the day, and shortstop Christina Gelardi added a double to right center that drove in two runs in the top of the second inning. A Lindsey Couturier homerun in the top of the third brought the score to 4-0, and Gelardi added another double this time bringing in one run to cap off New Haven's scoring.
The Pioneers answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to one. With the bases loaded and one out, junior
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) singled up the middle to knock in freshmen
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) and
Dana Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) for the Pioneers' first two runs of the game. After a pitching change, sophomore left fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) singled up the middle plating sophomore right fielder
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) who had reached on a Charger miscue earlier in the inning. Junior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Weber to score the fourth run of the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pioneers had an opportunity to tie the game with two on and two out, but New Haven's Nicole King was able to induce a groundout to second base to end the threat.
King earned the win tossing three and two-thirds innings of relief and allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three.
Sophomore
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) took the loss after giving up three earned runs (five total) on five hits and one walk in four innings of work. Weber pitched the final three innings and was able to sit down the final nine Chargers in order to close out the game.
Weber and Havens led the Pioneers at the plate, each going 2-for-3, while Weber added two RBI and a run scored. Junior shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.), Moss, and Miller had the other three hits in the game.
