BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2013) - Knotted at 2-apiece in the extra session, senior back Eirik Bjoernoe (Randaberg, Norway) converted on a penalty kick just 31 seconds in to send the second-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team to an exhilarating 3-2 triumph against NYIT Saturday in Brookville, N.Y.

Two short ticks prior, a handball committed by the Bears (5-2, 1-2 ECC) inside the 18-yard box forced the official's hand to point toward the penalty spot. On the ensuing whistle to re-start play, Bjoernoe ripped a shot past NYIT junior goalkeeper Liam Waddy (Northampton, England) for the game-winner.

Prior to the match reaching overtime, the Pioneers (8-0, 2-0 ECC) trailed by a goal with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore midfielder/forward Alberto Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) beat LIU Post senior netminder Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) on a flick into the left corner at the 81:08 mark, which made it a 2-1 contest.

But, the hosts answered with the equalizer 4:49 later, when freshman forward Johann Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) tapped in a feed from junior forward Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway). The goal was Kristjansson's fourth of the season.

In the opening 45 minutes, LIU Post had the lone tally, and owned a 1-0 edge at halftime. Austboe accounted for the marker, one-timing a shot by Waddy, off a pass from senior forward Cemil Turan (Staten Island, N.Y.).

NYIT tied things up though a minute-plus into the second stanza. Like Austboe, senior midfielder Vinny Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y.) found the back of the mesh on a one-timer to even the score at 1-all.

Jorgensen paced both keepers on the afternoon with four saves for the Pioneers. Waddy had two stops for the Bears, who held an 18-12 edge in shots, and a 5-4 clip in corner kicks.

Head Coach Andreas Lindberg and his LIU Post squad are back in action Friday (Oct. 4) against East Coast Conference foe Roberts Wesleyan. The opening kick is set for 2:30 p.m.
