BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2014) - Led by two
Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J.) tallies, the LIU Post field hockey team upended Northeast-10 Conference opponent Southern Connecticut State, 4-2, on Tuesday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Pioneers (7-1, 3-0 NE-10) were first on the board after
Kaycee Zelkovsky (Lambertville, N.J.) tapped a Margiotta pass into the bottom left of the cage in the fifth minute. This marks the freshman's fourth tally of the 2014 season, and the one-goal LIU Post lead would stand through the rest of the half.
Early in the latter stanza, Margiotta re-directed a
Lyn-Marie Wilson (Bridgetown, Barbados W.I.) shot to put the green and gold ahead by two.
Just over seven minutes later though, the Owls (2-7, 0-2 NE-10) cut the deficit in half on a goal by Whitney Dyer. However,
Lauren Adamusik (Clark, N.J.) answered shortly thereafter with a rip into the top right of the cage to re-gain the Pioneers' two-goal advantage.
At 58:09, Southern Connecticut was granted a penatly stroke, which Vienna Pallisco converted to make it a 3-2 game. But, Margiotta fired right back, scoring off a Wilson rebound in the 61st minute, to put the game away.
With her two-goal, two-assist effort, Margiotta has now compiled 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points this season. The Sewell native presently boasts the top goals-per-game average (2.00) in all of Division II.
The Pioneer offense took 32 shots, while the green and gold's back line yielded only four to Southern Connecticut. LIU Post sophomore goalkeeper
Ericka Parks (Nesconset, N.Y.) made two saves.
Head Coach
Raenee Savin and the Pioneers are back in action on Friday (Oct. 17), when they travel up to Easton, Mass. for an NE-10 tilt versus Stonehill at 6 p.m.
