PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2014) - The LIU Post men's soccer team captured its sixth-straight win on Saturday, defeating Philadelphia U., 1-0, in a non-conference match in Philadelphia.
The Pioneers (10-3-1) were led by junior keeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden), who made four saves in net for his sixth clean sheet of the season.
Both teams played to a scoreless first half. LIU Post recorded nine shots in the first 45 minutes, while Philadelphia (10-4-1) got off six shots. Malmstrom recorded two stops in the opening stanza. In addition, the Pioneers held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks in the first half.
In the second half, LIU Post's defense stepped up the intensity, as the Pioneers were able to hold off a Rams' attack that took eight shots, two of which were on target. Malmstrom made two saves, while the Pioneer offense looked to get on the board.
In the 75th minute, graduate midfielder
Tom Bowen (Aberdovey, Wales, U.K.) ripped a shot from 22 yards out that found the back of the net for the only tally of the match. The graduate's second goal of the season was all LIU Post needed, defeating Philadelphia, 1-0.
Bowen led the Pioneer offense with two shots on goal. Fellow graduate
Dale McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.) recorded the other LIU Post shot on goal.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 22), when they host Post U. in a non-conference tilt at Pioneer Soccer Park. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
