ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2014) - The No. 16 LIU Post women's soccer team used a balance offensive effort Friday, as the Pioneers defeated Roberts Wesleyan, 4-1, in East Coast Conference action in Rochester.
With the win, the Pioneers (13-1-1, 7-0-1 ECC) remain unbeaten in their last 14 games, while Roberts Wesleyan (8-9, 2-6 ECC) suffered its third loss in four contests.
LIU Post found itself leading early after senior back
Lauren Bellone (West Islip, N.Y.) was able to clean up a loose ball in front of the net for the goal in just the fourth minute of action.
Then, in the 13th minute, senior back
Rebecca Swedberg (Stockholm, Sweden) found the back of the mesh off a corner sent in by junior forward
Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway). For Swedberg, the tally was her first of the season, while Vistnes was credited with her second helper of the game.
Roberts Wesleyan wouldn't go quietly, however. Less than seven minutes later, Bella Mitrevski scored her 13th goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Both squads traded opportunities in the final 25 minutes of the first half. The Pioneers held an 11-4 shot advantage and won seven corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. Sophomore keeper
Hreffie Agnarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) made three saves in the stanza.
Throughout the second half, the Pioneer defense kept the Redhawks off the board. The offense was able to add two more goals in the final two minutes to cap the scoring for the green and gold.
In the 88th minute, Bellone was able to get a takeaway from the Roberts Wesleyan defense. The senior then ripped a shot that banged off the post, but she was able to send the rebound home for her second goal of the match.
Then, with time winding down, Vistnes dribbled through the box and the Roberts Wesleyan defense, sending a shot into the mesh for her 16th marker of the season.
In all, Agnarsdottir was called upon to make five saves, which ties her season-high.
Head Coach
Mark Dawson and the Pioneers round out their 2014 regular season on Sunday (Nov. 2), when they take on Daemen in an ECC tilt in Amherst. The opening kick is slated for 11 a.m.
