MANCHESTER, N.H. (Nov. 13, 2014) - The No. 5 seed LIU Post men's soccer team blanked 18th-ranked and fourth-seeded NYIT, 2-0, in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship Thursday night at Larkin Field in Manchester.
As a result, the Pioneers (15-4-1) advance to take on the top seed in Super Region One, Southern New Hampshire, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
LIU Post got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the first half. Junior midfielder
Matias Ruiz (Southampton, N.Y.) received a cross from fellow junior midfielder
Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway). Ruiz then one-timed the pass into the net to give the Pioneers the one-goal advantage.
Then, in the latter half, Ruiz sent a corner kick into the box. Forgaard lined it up with his back facing the goal, jumped up and connected on a stunning bicycle kick that found the mesh for an incredible finish.
That was all the offense LIU Post would need, as the Pioneers closed out the 2-0 win to set a date with the Penmen on Saturday.
