GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2014) - On Saturday, the LIU Post women's basketball team captured its first win of the 2014-15 season with a 58-56 win versus Pace in the ECC/NE-10 Challenge, hosted by Adelphi at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
The Pioneers (1-1) dominated down low, outscoring the Setters (0-2), 34-16, in the paint. Senior guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) led all scorers with 29 points.
LIU Post went on an 8-0 run to open the game. Williams, sophomore guard
Essence Casey (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and junior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Bronx, N.Y.) got the scoring started for the green and gold.
Yet, Pace battled back throughout the first half, tying the contest at 13-all with 10:41 left before the intermission. After a jumper from red-shirt freshman
Jasmine Bailey (Washington, D.C.) made it 15-13 in favor of the Pioneers, the Setters would go on to outscore LIU Post, 19-10, to take a 32-25 lead into halftime.
Williams scored 14 points in the opening half, while the Pioneers were able to gain an 18-10 advantage off points in the paint.
Throughout much of the second half, LIU Post found itself unable to climb out of the hole. It wasn't until two successful free throws by Williams with just over five minutes left in regulation that the Pioneers were able to go ahead (52-50). After a jumper from junior forward
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) made it 58-55, the LIU Post defense came up with stops down the stretch to close out the win.
Davis finished with nine rebounds and five points. Ratley added 10 points and two assists. Senior guard
Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in nine points and eight boards. Overall, the Pioneers out-rebounded Pace, 37-28.
