Men's and Women's Cross Country Compete in NCAA Regionals, Earn Two National Individual Bids

NASHUA, N.H. (Nov. 22, 2014) - Highlighted by Talya Williams (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Mike Scott (Fultonville, N.Y.) NCAA National qualifying times, the LIU Post men's and women's cross country squads placed 15th and fourth, respectively, at the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country Northeast Regional Championships at Mines Fall Park on Saturday.

Scott, placing sixth over all 191 athletes, completed the course at 31:38.5, earning him the seventh fastest 10-kilometer time in school history, All-Region honors and a trip to the 2014 NCAA National meet in Louisville. Finishing second for the green and gold was Steven Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) at 33:42.9. Freshman Thomas Flynn (Smithtown, N.Y.) completed the 10-kilometer at 34:15.0, while Ryan Gioe (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and and Tyler McGarvey (Babylon, N.Y.) finished at 35:40.2 and 36:05.2, respectively. The men's team placed 15th out of 28 institutions represented with a team average of 34:16. 

The women's squad placed fourth over all 27 institutions represented at Mines Fall Park with a 23:06 team average time, just one slot away from qualifying nationally. The entire group ran personal bests for a six-kilometer. Standout freshman Williams completed the course at 21:41.3, placing second over all 185 athletes, breaking the school record for a six-kilometer performance at a NCAA Regional competition, All-Region honors and a chance to compete in the NCAA National meet with Scott in Louisville. Elizabeth Stirling (Wantagh, N.Y.) placed 19th overall with a 22:35.8, also earning an All-Region accolade and posting the second fastest NCAA Regional time in school history. Freshman Lauren Hoffman (Melville, N.Y.) followed with the third-fastest NCAA Regional time at 22.56.5, good for 27th place. Shaylyn Stehl (Wantagh, N.Y.) raced to a ninth-fastest NCAA Regional time in LIU Post history at 23:47.6. Brooke Rozea (Syosset, N.Y.) and Jessica Wiking (Farmingdale, N.Y.) capped-off the Pioneer effort at 24:31.0 and 25:18.0, respectively.

Although this concludes the 2014 men's and women's cross country season, Williams and Scott are set to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. on December 6th.
