NEW YORK, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2014) - Freshman Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) won both of his matches at the 133-lb. weight class Saturday, but the LIU Post wrestling team dropped respective 32-12 and 26-20 decisions to NYU and Hunter at the Coles Sports Center.

Two bouts into the contest with NYU (5-1), Calderone gave LIU Post (1-4) a 6-3 advantage, after pinning Steven Nogradi (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) 1:05 into the second period. Yet, the Violets won the next seven weight classes, two via major decision and two via pinfall, en route to the win.

At 157, red-shirt freshman Jackson Mordente (Farmingville, N.Y.) came up just short against NYU's Raymond Jazikoff (South Plainfield, N.J.) in a 4-3 loss. The Pioneers wrapped up their scoring in the match at heavyweight, as freshman James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was credited with the win by forfeit.

The bout with Hunter (6-1) was a see-saw affair. Calderone (13-1) and fellow freshman Matt Langan (Wantagh, N.Y.) each majored their opponent at 133 and 149, respectively, but the green and gold trailed 9-8 after four disciplines had been completed.

In the 157-lb. weight class, Mordente was saddled with the tough-luck 5-4 three-overtime loss to Nick Wilkie (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). The Hawks would go on to take the 165-lb. bout as well, via technical fall, to widen their cushion to 17-8.

LIU Post fought back though, winning the next two matches by forfeit to grab their first lead of the contest (20-17). However, Hunter won the final two weight classes, the last by pinfall, to secure the victory.

Head Coach Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers return to the mat next Saturday (Dec. 13), when they face Roger Williams and Merchant Marine at the Mariner Duals in Kings Point, N.Y. Action is scheduled for a noon start.
