Women's Basketball Routs Mercy, 88-62

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2014) - On Wednesday, the LIU Post women's basketball team continued its hot play, beating Mercy, 88-62, in an East Coast Conference battle in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. Five different Pioneers scored in double figures as the green and gold came away with their sixth-straight win.

The Pioneers (18-5, 15-2 ECC) came out shooting, opening up an 8-2 lead just over three-and-a-half minutes into the contest. Senior guard Kiki Sears (Hampton, Va.) started up the scoring with a three just 10 seconds after tip-off, and netted a lay-up to round it out.

With LIU Post leading 29-22, senior forward Nijah LaCourt (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a lay-in with 2:55 left, and Sears drilled a jay off an assist from LaCourt to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the half (33-22). The visitors took a 36-28 advantage into the break and were led by Sears, who had 12 first-half points. The Pioneers out-rebounded the Mavericks (2-21, 1-17 ECC), 32-21, with junior guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) paving the way with seven boards.

The green and gold were able to push the tempo in the first half, outscoring Mercy, 12-9, in fast-break points. The Pioneers also held an 18-15 advantage in points in the paint.

After Mercy commenced the scoring in the second half, the Pioneers responded with a 16-4 run that extended their advantage to 52-33, which sealed the victory. Williams had six points during the spurt, while LaCourt and senior guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in five apiece.

Sears finished with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 from behind the arc. She dished out five assists as well. Peters amassed 18 points and was 4-of-6 from three-point territory, while adding five assists. Williams compiled 17 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two blocks. LaCourt had a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) off the bench. Sophomore guard Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched in 10 points.

Head Coach Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to action Saturday (Feb. 22), when they host St. Thomas Aquinas in an ECC tilt at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y. Prior to the contest, the team will be honoring its five graduating seniors. The opening tip is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
