No. 1 Women's Lacrosse Runs Past Assumption, 15-5

WORCESTER, Mass. (Mar. 27, 2014) - The top-ranked LIU Post women's lacrosse team defeated Assumption on Thursday, 15-5, for its ninth-straight victory to open the 2014 season.
Assumption (5-3) started the scoring on a free-position shot in the first four minutes of play, but LIU Post (9-0) would go on to outscore the Greyhounds 9-2 to end the first half. This would pave the way for a six-goal second half to complete the rout for the Pioneers.
Junior midfielder Jenna Pierro (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored twice in the first half and got her hat trick in the latter. She was one of three players to get three goals on the afternoon for the visitors, as the feat was matched by senior attackers Samantha Losco (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.). Sileo continued to be an effective distributor of the ball, dishing out five assists, while senior attacker Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists of her own.
Senior midfielder Katie Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Connor Bird (Syosset, N.Y.) each won three draw controls. Rotan put home a goal and helped out on two other scores as well. Red-shirt sophomore attacker Alexis Newman (Medford Lakes, N.J.), freshman attacker Stefani Vagelatos (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and rookie midfielder Cara Douglas (West Islip, N.Y.) tallied one goal apiece. On the defensive end, sophomore Emily Hanifan (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the way with three caused turnovers.
Between the pipes, senior goalie Katie Hannan (Gansevoort, N.Y.) made three saves in the cage for the green and gold. Her counterparts, Jaclyn Chirco and Michelle Monahan, combined for nine stops for the Greyhounds.
LIU Post outshot Assumption 27-9 in the contest and forced the Greyhounds to commit 24 turnovers. The Pioneers also dominated the ground ball (28-18) and draw control (13-9) battles. In addition, the green and gold were a perfect 9-for-9 on clears in the first half, en route to a 16-for-20 overall performance on clear attempts.
Head Coach Meghan McNamara and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Mar. 29), as the team travels to Rochester, N.Y. for a match-up with Roberts Wesleyan. The opening draw control is set for noon.
