No. 4 Men's Lacrosse Topples UDC, 16-4

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2014) - On Saturday, a total of 10 different players registered at least one point, as the fourth-ranked LIU Post men's lacrosse team bested ECC foe and first-year program UDC, 16-4, at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y.
The Pioneers (3-0, 2-0 ECC) made quick work of the Firebirds (0-3, 0-2 ECC) in the first half, outscoring their opposition by an 8-1 count. Sophomore attackman
Matty Beccaris (North Bellmore, N.Y.) paced the green and gold's offense in the stretch with five points (2 G, 3 A). Graduate attackman/midfielder
Joe Costello (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior attackman
Chris Caiazza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) added two goals apiece.
Coming out of the break, LIU Post kept up the intensity, scoring a trio of unanswered goals to start the third quarter. Sophomore attackman
Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) netted two unassisted tallies, while Caiazza found the back of the cage off a feed from sophomore attackman
Anthony DeLuca (West Islip, N.Y.). That proved to be all the hosts needed, as UDC only came within eight (11-3) the rest of the way.
For the contest, Beccaris had a game-high six points (2 G, 4 A). Slane tallied three goals and two assists for a five-point showing (3 G, 2 A). Caiazza and Costello each had a hat trick. Senior defenseman
T.J. McAndrew (Randolph, N.J.) scooped up three ground balls and caused three turnovers. Junior defenseman
Steve Gruse (New Fairfield, Conn.) collected two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
The Pioneers owned a commanding 55-20 advantage in shots, and a 31-17 edge in ground balls. They were also a perfect 22-of-22 on clears, and converted on 2-of-6 (33.3 percent) man-up opportunities.

John Jez and his LIU Post squad are back in action Tuesday (Mar. 11), when they round out a season-opening four-game homestand versus No. 3 Adelphi. The opening tip is set for 3 p.m.
