DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2014) - The 18th-ranked LIU Post softball team swept a pair of East Coast Conference games Saturday at Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. The Pioneers were victorious by the scores of 7-0 and 5-1.

LIU Post (26-4, 13-1 ECC) gave freshman starter Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) all the support she needed in the opener when sophomore third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) drilled her third homer of the season in the top of the second.

The green and gold added to the lead with two runs in the sixth inning on a blast by junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) after senior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single to left-center.

The Pioneers were not done yet, as they piled on four runs on four hits in the final frame with RBIs off the bats of senior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Hagenah, sophomore Dana Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.), and senior pinch hitter Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.).

Martin earned her 10th win of the season, pitching a complete-game five-hitter, walking three and fanning five.

Junior left fielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.), freshman first baseman Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.), Hagenah, and Palmeri all finished Game One with two hits.

In the nightcap, LIU Post once again opened the scoring in the top of the second. This time, Palmeri reached on a one-out base knock, advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior second baseman Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.), and scored on Maverick miscues.

Mercy (7-26, 3-13 ECC) evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Natalie Wabshinak came home on a fielder's choice.

The Pioneers pulled away in the top of the sixth inning though. With two outs, Gonzalez singled up the middle to plate junior right fielder Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) from second base. After Hagenah was hit by a pitch, Dzierzynski came to bat and swatted her league-leading 11th roundtripper of the season to extend the lead to 5-1.

Junior Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) got the start, tossing four innings and allowing one run. Sophomore Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) earned her first win of the season (1-1) as she closed out the final three innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk.

Dzierzynski and Palmeri each finished Game Two 3-for-4, while McCoy and Gonzalez added 2-for-4 performances.

The Pioneers return to action Sunday (Apr. 13) when they head to Caldwell, N.J. to take on No. 11 Caldwell for a non-conference twinbill. First pitch is set for noon.
