SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2014) - The 18th-ranked LIU Post softball team earned another sweep Saturday, downing East Coast Conference opponent St. Thomas Aquinas by the scores of 2-0 and 8-0 in Sparkill, N.Y.

As a result, the Pioneers improved their overall record to 33-5 with a league mark of 19-1. Meanwhile, the Spartans fell to 2-28 on the season, alongside an ECC clip of 1-19.

The matinee was scoreless through four innings as neither side could muster a run. But, in the top of the fifth, junior outfielder Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) led off with a single. Two batters later, senior outfielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) blasted her 11th home run of the season to give LIU Post a 2-0 advantage.

That was all the scoring the visitors needed as senior starter Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) earned her 16th win of the season. She allowed five hits and one walk with two strikeouts over five innings of work. Sophomore Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) tossed the final two innings to collect her seventh save of the year. She set the Spartans down in order in both the sixth and seventh frames to secure the win.

Havens and Gonzalez each finished the opener 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Gonzalez added a walk and two RBIs.

The Pioneers did not wait as long to cross the plate in Game Two. Havens singled to lead off the game and Gonzalez doubled her home two batters later. A subsequent groundout then moved Gonzalez to third, and junior catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Gonzalez to score the second run of the inning.

The green and gold added another two runs in the next frame on an RBI double by sophomore third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) and an RBI groundout by senior second baseman Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.).

After pushing across a fifth run in the third, the Pioneers extended their lead to 8-0 with a three-run fifth inning as Palmeri, Havens, and Carmine all knocked in runs.

Freshman hurler Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) was dominant in the circle, improving to 13-0 on the season. The rookie allowed just one hit over five innings while walking none and fanning six.

Havens led the way at the plate as she put forth a 3-for-4 showing with an RBI and a run scored.

The Pioneers are back in action on Monday (Apr. 21) as they head to Rockville Centre, N.Y. for a make-up doubleheader at conference rival Molloy. Play is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
