Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday, as the Pioneers fell to East Coast Conference foe Mercy, 12-8, at Mavericks Field in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
Due to the contest being a make-up game from earlier in the year, the green and gold were the home team on the scoreboard despite the tilt being played at Mercy's home field.
The Pioneers (15-13, 8-8 ECC) fell behind early, as the Mavericks (12-20, 8-8 ECC) plated a run in the top of the second.
LIU Post wouldn't stay off the board for long, as junior
Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.) grounded into a run-scoring double play in the bottom of the fourth.
In the sixth, both offenses came to life. Mercy plated two runs on back-to-back triples, while the Pioneers responded with a two-spot of their own. With two on, freshman
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) singled to center, scoring junior
Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.). Later, Vidal produced another run with an RBI groundout.
Both squads traded runs in the seventh as well. After the Mavericks plated a run, senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) singled to right, scoring freshman
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.).
In the eighth, the Mavericks pulled away with seven runs. But, the Pioneers wouldn't go away quietly.
In the bottom of the frame, junior
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) roped a two-run single to right, plating Vidal and
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.). Then, in the ninth, freshman
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) hit an inside-the-park home run that chased home fellow freshman
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.).
Tinney finished with his first career three-hit game (3-for-4, 1 RBI). Tolan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Brunetti and Daley both drove in two runs in the loss.
The Pioneers return to action Friday (Apr. 25), when they head to Bridgeport, Conn. to take on Bridgeport in the first game of a four-game set. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
