Box Score 2 BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team lost its third- and fourth-straight decision Saturday, dropping both ends of an East Coast Conference doubleheader against Bridgeport, 1-0 and 7-4, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y.
In the opener, the Pioneers (15-16, 8-11 ECC) couldn't put together much offense to back freshman starter
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.). The righty tossed 7.1 scoreless innings, scattered six hits and struck out a career-best 11 in his longest outing of the season.
Bridgeport (15-15, 11-12 ECC) capitalized on a ninth inning error to score its only run.
The green and gold did threaten in last licks though when junior
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double off the fence in right. However, the Pioneers were unable to bring him around.
Freshman
Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss despite giving up just one unearned run in 1.2 innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Pioneers found themselves trailing early after the Purple Knights plated two in the top of the first.
LIU Post would score a run in the bottom of the second when junior
Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.) singled to left, plating freshman
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.).
Bridgeport's Mike Miniter quieted the Pioneers comeback, however, with a three-run homer in the top of the fourth, and the Purple Knights added two more in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers attempted to mount a comeback. With one on and one out, sophomore
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) doubled down the line in left, putting runners at second and third. Junior
Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) to score. Senior
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) followed with a double to right-center that brought home Alessi. Freshman
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) added a single to center to score Tolan. But, that was all the Pioneers would get, as Bridgeport's Sal Lovaglio was able to secure his third win of the season.
The Pioneers and Purple Knights wrap up their four-game set with an afternoon matinee on Sunday (Apr. 27) at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
