Long's Complete Game Guides Baseball to 10-1 Win Over Bridgeport
Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Apr. 27, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team used an eight-run eighth to back a stellar outing from freshman
James Long (Oceanside, N.Y.), who tossed a complete game in the Pioneers' 10-1 win over Bridgeport Sunday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn.
The Pioneers (16-16, 9-11 ECC) found themselves down early, as the Purple Knights (17-23-1, 11-13 ECC) plated a run in the bottom of the second, but that was all Bridgeport would get against Long.
In the top of the third, senior
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) roped a game-tying RBI single to right, scoring junior
Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.), who reached after being plunked to start the inning.
Later, in the sixth, freshman
Kyle Fagan (Wantagh, N.Y.) plated Tolan to give the green and gold a 2-1 edge.
The bats then came alive in the eighth, as the Pioneers sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs, two off the bat of freshman
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) in two separate at-bats.
Tolan finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.
Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.),
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.), Vidal and Fagan all drove in a run, while Daley and Fagan both had two-hit games.
Long went the distance to earn his second win of the season. The tall lefty scattered five hits, allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out nine.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 29), when they host Felician in a non-conference tilt at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
