Box Score 2 BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2014) - A five-hit day by freshman first baseman
Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) helped the No. 22 LIU Post softball team to its 20th straight win after a doubleheader sweep of neighboring NYIT on Tuesday at the LIU Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y.
The Pioneers (23-3, 10-0 ECC) secured a 7-2 win in the opener, before rolling to a 10-0 victory over five innings in the nightcap.
The green and gold never trailed the Bears (7-15, 2-10 ECC) on the day as senior shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) blasted a first-inning three-run homer in Game One to straightaway center with McCoy and senior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) aboard.
McCoy extended the lead to 4-0 with an RBI double in the next frame, plating senior pitcher
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.). The visitors then cut the lead in half in the top of the third after Pioneer miscues and an RBI single by Chelsea Gourdin.
The Pioneers capped off the scoring in the fifth when sophomore designated player
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) came to the dish with the bases loaded and cleared them on the first pitch she saw with a double to right-center.
Weber earned her 12th win of the season in the circle, tossing five innings of two-run ball (one earned). The senior scattered four hits and two walks while fanning six. Junior
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) and sophomore
Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) each threw a hitless frame in relief.
In Game Two, the Pioneers jumped ahead to a 5-0 advantage in the first and never looked back as they added two runs in each of the second and third innings along with a lone run in the fourth.
McCoy crossed the plate first as she cleared the bleachers beyond the left-field fence with her second homer of the season. After Hagenah and Swantek reached, junior catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) doubled to left-center to bring home Hagenah. Sophomore third baseman
Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) and freshman second baseman
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) followed with RBI knocks of their own to wrap up the scoring.
The score moved to 7-0 in the second inning, following back-to-back RBI base hits off the bats of Swantek and Dzierzynski.
Gonzalez extended the lead to 9-0 in the third when she sent her team-leading eighth roundtripper over the fence in right-center field with junior right fielder
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) aboard. Miller also had her hand in the 10th and final run as she came to bat with the bases loaded in the next inning and a groundout to short forced home senior pinch runner
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.).
Freshman
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) pitched a five-inning one-hit shutout, giving up four walks while striking out two.
McCoy led the offense with a 5-for-7 performance, including a double and a home run. Dzierzynski had four hits, two of which were doubles, while Miller, Hagenah, Gonzalez, and Swantek each finished the day with two hits.
The Pioneers are back in action Thursday (Apr. 10), as they host conference rival Molloy for a twinbill slated to start at 3 p.m. at the LIU Post Softball Complex.
