DeCarli's Gem Lifts Baseball to 3-1 Win Over Queens
Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 2, 2014) - On Friday, the LIU Post baseball team used a complete game from freshman
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.) to top East Coast Conference foe Queens, 3-1, in the series opener in Flushing, N.Y.
The Pioneers (17-17, 10-11 ECC) found themselves down 1-0 as the Knights (8-23, 3-18 ECC) plated a run in the sixth off DeCarli. But, the freshman would bounce back and shut down the hosts for the final three frames.
Trailing by a run, the green and gold tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh. After senior
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, freshman
Brian Tinney (Farmingdale, N.Y.) moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Then, Tolan stole third, putting the tying run just 90 feet away. Junior
Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.) produced a run with an RBI groundout.
In the eighth, the Pioneers took advantage of a Queens miscue to go ahead 2-1. With a runner on third and two out, senior
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error that allowed pinch runner
John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) to score the go-ahead run.
Later, in the ninth, freshman
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Tinney for an insurance run.
DeCarli got three quick outs in the bottom of the ninth to improve to 3-0 on the season. The righty picked up his first career complete game, scattering four hits, allowing one earned run, walking four and striking out nine.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday (May 3), when they host Queens for an ECC doubleheader at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y. The LIU Post baseball team will be honoring the program's four graduating seniors prior to first pitch, which is slated for noon.
