Three Pioneers Garner Daktronics All-America Softball Honors
ROLLA, Mo. (May 21, 2014) - Adding to an already program-setting 2014 season, the LIU Post softball team placed three names on the 2014 Daktronics All-America Team, as announced Wednesday afternoon.
For the first time in team history, the Pioneers landed a player on the first-team. Junior catcher
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) earned the honors with a .439 batting average and a school-record 25 long balls. Her home run total currently ranks third in Division II, and her .925 slugging percentage places her ninth in the nation. The 2014 East Coast Conference and Daktronics East Region Player of the Year, Dzierzynski has led the Pioneers to a 50-9 record and the team's first East Region title since 2011. In addition to her home run record, she set new single-season program marks with 75 RBIs, 173 total bases, 82 hits and 40 extra-base knocks.
A regular in the Pioneer outfield the last three seasons, senior
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) claimed a spot on the Daktronics All-America third-team. She has also garnered both NFCA and Daktronics All-East Region accolades, along with being selected to the All-ECC first-team. The Hauppauge, N.Y. native paces the team with four triples, and is presently second with 18 homers, 66 RBIs, 59 runs scored, 29 walks, 143 total bases and a .753 slugging clip. Meanwhile, her 70 hits and 11 doubles are good for fourth on the squad.
After being dubbed the East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, senior
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) was tabbed as a Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention. The righty was chosen to the Daktronics and NFCA All-Region first-team rosters. The senior has spearheaded the green and gold in the circle with a record of 25-4. She sports an impressive 2.21 ERA as well, surrendering just 50 earned runs over 158.1 innings of work.
The Pioneers will take on top-ranked West Texas A&M on Thursday (May 22) in their first game of the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
