Late Goal Downs Men's Soccer in 5-4 Loss at Molloy
Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2014) -
The LIU Post men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker Wednesday, 5-4, as Molloy scored in the 88th minute, breaking a 4-all tie to give the Lions an East Coast Conference win at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre.
The Pioneers (4-3, 1-1 ECC) battled back numerous times throughout the match, but Molloy (1-4-1, 1-1-0 ECC) had the last say before the final horn sounded.
Early in the first half, the Pioneers found themselves trailing after Hamza Elotmani scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute. George Sinacore threw the ball in from out of bounds and Elotmani sent it into the upper right corner off a bicycle kick.
In the 23rd minute, graduate
Dale McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.) scored off an assist from freshman
Jason Lampkin (Hawardon, North Wales, United Kingdom) to tie it at 1-apiece.
With four minutes to go before halftime, Molloy would get on the board again. This time, Dane Leavy placed a shot into the lower left corner for the 2-1 edge. The Pioneers failed to capitalize on three straight corner kicks in the final three minutes of action and trailed by a goal at the break.
Molloy would extend its lead to 3-1 just six minutes into the second half. Elotmani was able to fire home a rebound for the two-goal advantage.
LIU Post would respond, however. Lampkin scored two goals in a six-minute span to even things up at 3-all. The freshman's first goal came off an assist from junior
Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway), who crossed a header that found the foot of Lampkin. In the 66th minute, Lampkin sent one home into the lower right corner from about 10 yards out.
The Lions had an answer in the 75th minute, though. Stephen Polimeni sent a cross into the box that Ryan Fackner headed in for the 4-3 edge.
The Pioneers would respond yet again. This time, in the 85th minute, senior
Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) was able to beat Molloy's keeper, Justin Corke, to knot the match at 4-4.
But, Molloy would have the last marker. Joey Pinto converted a free kick from about 25 yards out, giving Molloy the 5-4 win.
In net, freshman
Kevin LaBarbera (Miller Place, N.Y.) and junior
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) split time. LaBarbera made one save in his 45 minutes, while Malmstrom turned aside two shots in the latter 45. For Molloy, Corke made eight stops.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Sept. 27), when they take on ECC rival NYIT in Old Westbury, N.Y. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
