Men's Soccer Battles NYIT to 1-1 Draw
Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the LIU Post men's soccer team played East Coast Conference rival NYIT to a 1-1 stalemate in Old Westbury.
The Bears (5-1-1, 2-0-1 ECC) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the third minute. Ivan Rico scored for NYIT, beating LIU Post's (4-3-1, 1-1-1 ECC) junior keeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) to the far side.
The green and gold would respond just over 14 minutes later. Senior
Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) was able to coral a loose ball in front of the net and put it into the mesh to tie it at 1-all.
After the two squads traded markers in the first 45 minutes, the next 65 minutes saw the Pioneers outshoot the Bears, 13-8, but neither team found the back of the net. Overall, the teams were just about even on the scoresheet. NYIT held a slim 7-6 advantage in corner kicks, and a 5-4 lead in saves.
As the action intensified, so did the physical play. Both teams were issued a pair of yellow cards and a red card. LIU Post's
Johan Rundqvist (Gothenburg, Sweden) was cited for the first yellow card just two minutes into the match. At 5:10, the Pioneers received their second yellow card, this one on Austboe. The Bears' first yellow card was called on Harvey Houpe in the seventh minute. Later, in the second half, Alex Barbosa was cited at the 60th minute. At the 117th minute, in double overtime, both NYIT's Alberto Ruiz and LIU Post's
Alex Billington earned red cards as the game came to a tie.
