No. 8 Men's Soccer Falls to SCSU in 2014 Opener, 1-0
Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 4, 2014) - The LIU Post men's soccer team dropped the opening game of the 2014 season Thursday after a tally by Southern Connecticut State just 72 seconds into the contest at the Adelphi Alumni Invitational, held at Motamed Field in Garden City, N.Y.
The No. 8 Pioneers (0-1) outshot the Owls (1-0), 15-8, but a cross into the box was headed home by Kevin Joslyn just 1:12 into regulation, proving to be all Southern Connecticut would need to best the green and gold.
After LIU Post began the contest with a turnover, the Owls countered down the right side. Southern Connecticut's Alex Soriano sent a ball from the right into the middle, where Joslyn was able to head it by freshman keeper
Kevin LaBarbera (Miller Place, N.Y.) for the goal.
The Pioneers had their share of opportunities, as senior forward
Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) got off four shots (two SOG).
LIU Post's best opportunity came with less than a minute on the clock in the second half as the back line sent a ball high into the air and down the field. Austboe was able to get behind the Owl defense, corral the ball off his chest, and fire a shot from just outside the box that sailed high.
LIU Post was able to get four of its 15 shots on goal, but freshman keeper Noah Veronier stood tall to keep the high-powered Pioneer offense off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes. For the green and gold, LaBarbera faced eight shots in total, two of which went on goal. The freshman made one save in his collegiate debut.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Sept. 6), when they take on Adelphi at 7:30 p.m. in Garden City.
