Women's Basketball Topples STAC, 71-57

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2015) - Behind a 21-point, 16 rebound effort from junior center Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.), the LIU Post women's basketball team captured its third-straight win, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas, 71-57, in East Coast Conference action at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville.

Davis' double-double was her third-straight and sixth for the season. Senior guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) led all scorers with 22 points. The senior came close to her first career triple-double as she hauled in eight boards and dished out eight assists.

The Pioneers (8-5, 4-1 ECC) led for the duration of the contest. LIU Post jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Spartans (6-9, 2-4 ECC) got on the board with a three from Jenna Erickson. That would be as close at St. Thomas Aquinas would get in the first half, as the Pioneers stepped on the gas shortly thereafter. The green and gold opened up a 14 point lead (36-22) after senior guard Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drained a three, before Williams went 1-of-2 from the line. The Spartans would close out the half on a 6-2 run, but LIU Post held a 38-28 lead at the break.

Davis had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. Williams collected 10 points and seven assists, while Castle scored nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.

In the second half, St. Thomas Aquinas opened with a 7-2 spurt to get within five (40-35), but the Pioneers would again hit the throttle and put distance between themselves and the Spartans. With LIU Post leading 44-37, Williams hit a three then junior guard Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Davis and Williams hit lay-ups to give the Pioneers a 16-point advantage (53-37). Senior forward Jessica Little (Wyandanch, N.Y.) followed with five straight points to increase the LIU Post lead to 19 (58-39).

Later in the half, a Ratley three gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the contest at 20 (63-43). From there, the green and gold cruised to their third-straight win.

Castle finished with nine points off the bench. Ratley added seven points and seven boards.

Head Coach Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 14), when they host Molloy in an ECC tilt. The opening tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Brookville.
