BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2015) - Behind a season-high 24 points from senior guard
Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the LIU Post women's basketball team captured its fourth-straight win, defeating Molloy, 65-60, in East Coast Conference play at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville.
Castle was 8-of-12 from the floor, including a season-best 5-of-7 from deep. The senior also added four rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal in 39 minutes of action. Senior guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) had 14 points and four rebounds, despite foulilng out with 7:09 to go in regulation. Junior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
In the opening half, the Pioneers (9-5, 5-1 ECC) battled back from an early six-point deficit. After junior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a fast-break lay-up to cut the deficit to two (6-4), Williams drained a three to give the Pioneers their first lead (7-6). Soon after, Molloy's (5-8, 1-5 ECC) Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a trey of her own to give the Lions a two-point cushion (12-10). Then, the green and gold rattled off six straight points from Castle and red-shirt senior forward
Jessica Little (Wyandanch, N.Y.) to go up 16-12.
Later, with two minutes to go before halftime and the Pioneers leading 29-26, Castle buried a jumper to give the green and gold a five-point edge. Then, with 1:17 on the clock, Castle made two free throws to give LIU Post a 33-26 advantage at the break.
The Pioneers lived by the three-ball in the first half, shooting 6-of-11 from long distance. Castle was 3-for-3, Williams was 2-for-3 and Little went 1-for-4.
In the second half, a jumper from Williams with 14:18 to go in regulation gave the Pioneers a 12-point lead (44-32). However, that basket would start a stretch of 10-plus minutes that LIU Post failed to hit a field goal. Over that span, the Lions went on a 14-1 run in a seven-minute spurt to take a 46-45 lead with 7:46 to go.
With the Pioneers down two (54-52), Castle drained her fourth three-pointer of the contest, ending the green and gold's field-goal drought and giving the hosts a one-point edge (55-54). Down the stretch, LIU Post outscored Molloy, 10-6, to secure its fourth-straight win.
