Indoor Track Places Strong at St. Joseph's Winter Invite

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2015) - The LIU Post men's and women's indoor track and field teams headed eastward to the inaugural St. Joseph's Winter Invitational on Saturday. Members of the green and gold took four track events, while placing high in eight races and one field discipline on the day.
Red-shirt sophomore
Mike Scott (Fultonville, N.Y.) was the only runner to finish first twice in the invitational, as he beat the field in the men's 1,000-meter and 3,000-meter races. In the 1,000-meter discipline, Scott's time of 2:41.33 was nearly a full five seconds faster than that of the second-place runner, Sacred Heart's Cameron Swift (Oxford, Conn.) (2:46.01). Three other Pioneers placed inside the Top-7, headlined by a fifth-place showing from sophomore
Tyler McGarvey (Babylon, N.Y.). McGarvey's time of 2:51.95 was more than two-tenths of a second faster than the sixth-place clocking of red-shirt junior teammate
Steven Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) (2:52.19). Rounding out the Pioneers' Top-7 showing was freshman
Ryan Gioe (Huntington Station, N.Y.), who clocked a time of 2:52.51 in the race.
Scott saved his most dominant performance for the 3,000-meter race. His winning time of 9:06.08 was nearly 30 seconds faster than the time of runner-up Justin Britton of the Central Park Track Club (9:35.00). Arnone placed fifth in the race (9:43.79), while McGarvey (9:50.99) crossed the finish line in eighth place. Gioe finished inside the Top-10, placing ninth (9:59.43).
Graduate middle distance runner
Robin Lynn (Glen Gardner, N.J.) led a parade of Pioneers across the line in the women's 1,000-meter race. Six green and gold harriers finished inside the Top-10, led by Lynn's winning time of 3:13.12, besting freshman teammate
Talya Williams (Schenectady, N.Y.) by seven-hundredths of a second (3:13.19). Junior
Elizabeth Stirling (Wantagh, N.Y.) crossed the line in fourth (3:20.72), while freshman
Lauren Hoffman (Melville, N.Y.) rounded out the Top-5 with a time of 3:23.22. Seventh place went to freshman
Brooke Rozea (Syosset, N.Y.), who clocked a run of 3:32.85, while junior
Jessica Wiking (Farmingdale, N.Y.) grabbed eighth place (3:32.95). Senior
Shaylyn Stehl (Wantagh, N.Y.) just missed the Top-10, finishing the race in a time of 3:37.71.
Stirling was the top Pioneer in the women's 3,000-meter race, finishing in second place with a time of 10:46.01. Williams was a third-place finisher, crossing the finish line in 10:48.67. Hoffman (11:16.46) placed sixth for the green and gold, while Rozea (11:52.43) just missed a Top-10 showing.
Graduate sprinter
Dale McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.) was victorious in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a time of 22.95. Freshman runner
Toby Ilomuanya (South Orange, N.J.) finished in the top half of the field, ending up in 26th place (24.80). McDonald also placed third in the 400-meter race, clocking a time of 51.32, while Ilomuanya placed eighth (54.33).
Freshman sprinter
Danae Glover (North Babylon, N.Y.) led the women's team in the sprint categories. Glover ran to a 15th-place performance (29.11) in the 200-meter dash and recorded a Top-10 showing in the 400-meter race (1:05.27).
Finally, freshman
Bjorn Bjornsson (Levittown, N.Y.) was the top Pioneer in the field events. Bjornsson earned a fourth-place finish in the men's long jump, leaping 6.34 meters.
