WALTHAM, Mass. (Jan. 5, 2015) - The LIU Post women's basketball team got back to its winning ways Monday, defeating Bentley, 66-57, in non-conference action at the Dana Center.
With the win, the Pioneers (6-5) snapped a three-game skid, while ending the Falcons' (7-6) three-game winning streak. The victory was LIU Post's first against Bentley in over four years.
In the teams' first meeting since the 2014 NCAA East Region Final, the green and gold shot an impressive 56.0 percent (14-of-25) in the second half to top the defending national champions.
The two squads battled back-and-forth throughout the first half, as no team led by more than six points. Trailing 25-19 with just under five minutes before the break, the Pioneers rattled off a quick 7-0 run to take a 26-25 advantage into halftime. During the spurt, red-shirt senior forward
Jessica Little (Wyandanch, N.Y.) drained a pair of threes, before senior guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 from the line with 16 seconds to go.
Williams finished with a team-leading 12 first-half points. Junior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) added eight points and seven rebounds. Little's six points rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, Bentley went in front (38-36) at the 13:11 mark, but that would be the Falcons' last lead of the contest. With LIU Post ahead 44-43, Williams and Little hit back-to-back treys that sparked a 15-5 run to give the green and gold an advantage they would never relinquish.
Williams finished with a team-high 26 points. Little scored a career-best 14 points, while Davis added 13 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Little was 5-of-6 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. As a team, the Pioneers shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from long distance.
The Falcons, who were led by Jen Gemma (28 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks), shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) for the game, which included a 10.0 percent (2-for-20) clip from three-point range.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 7), when they head to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to resume East Coast Conference play against Mercy. The opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
