Women's Basketball Loses to Pace in Season Opener, 71-56
Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2015) - On Saturday, the LIU Post women's basketball team lost its 2015-16 season opener to Pace University, 71-56, in the East Coast Conference/Northeast-10 Conference Challenge at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
The Pioneers (0-1) were led by freshman guard
Kyla Formey (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who scored 17 points and hauled in eight rebounds in her collegiate debut. Senior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 14 points off the bench, while junior forward
Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) chipped in 10 points and eight boards.
LIU Post got off to a slow start, scoring just eight points in the first quarter, and trailed 20-8 after the first 10 minutes.
It was more of the same in the second quarter, as the Setters (1-0) outscored the Pioneers by an 11-point margin to take a 41-18 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Pioneers found their stroke, shooting 52.0 percent
(13-for-25) from the floor. LIU Post outscored Pace, 23-18, in the period, but trailed 59-41 heading into the final 10 minutes.
In the fourth, the Pioneers continued their hot shooting, as they shot 54.5 percent
(6-for-11) from the floor. LIU Post opened the fourth with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit down to 11 (59-48). However, Pace pulled away late with free throws to close out the game.
Senior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) finished with nine points, three rebounds and two blocks. Junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) brought down 11 boards in her Pioneer debut. Senior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) dished out four assists.
Head Coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers return to the hardwood on Sunday (Nov. 15), when they take on Adelphi University, as they close out the ECC/NE-10 Challenge. The opening tip is slated for 3:30 p.m. from Pleasantville.
