CHARLESTON, W. Va. (Nov. 19, 2015) - For the second-straight year, the 12th-ranked and second-seeded LIU Post men's soccer team won the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship East Region title, after knocking off No. 3 and top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University, 5-4, in penalty kicks on Thursday at Schoenbaum Stadium.
In a re-match of last year's regional semifinal, LIU Post (15-2-3) and Southern New Hampshire (19-1-1) played a hard-fought first 45 minutes. The Penmen outshot the Pioneers, 6-4, with SNHU's keeper making three saves. Junior keeper
Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) turned aside one shot for LIU Post.
In the second half, it was more of the same. Both keepers made one save, as the game went to overtime.
In the first extra session, Malmstrom was called upon to make a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless. In the second overtime, SNHU's keeper kept out a header from freshman forward
Charlie Ledula (London, England) to send the game to penalty kicks.
Both teams converted their first four attempts. In the fifth round, graduate back
Seb Baxter (Saffron Walden, England) scored to put the Pioneers up 5-4. With a chance to send it to a sixth round, SNHU's Jonathan Lupinelli (Mont de Marsan, France) missed wide right, sending the Pioneers to the quarterfinals.
Head Coach
Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers will now play sixth-ranked University of Charleston on Saturday (Nov. 21) at 7 p.m.
