Women's Basketball Drops 77-71 Double-OT Decision to Assumption
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 30, 2015) - On Wednesday, the LIU Post women's basketball team dropped a 77-71 decision in double overtime to Assumption College in a non-conference game at the Pratt Recreation Center.
With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 1-10, while Assumption improves to 9-2.
It was a tale of two halves as the Pioneers took a 35-32 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. Both teams shot well from the floor, with LIU Post making over 46 percent on its shots. The Greyhounds shot over 43 percent from the floor in the game's first 20 minutes. Seniors
Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) led the green and gold with nine and eight points respectively.
Fast forward to late in the fourth quarter and the Pioneers leading by four (55-51). Gibbs would hit one of her three tree-pointers to make it 58-51 with under three minutes to go.
Assumption would respond with a quick 4-0 burst to make it 58-55 game. Gibbs would answer with a jumper with just over a minute to go to make it a five-point game (60-55), but the Greyhounds would have the last say. Down three (61-58) with time winding down, Allison Stoddard hit a deep trey with under a second on the clock, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, Assumption would take a 65-63 lead late, but junior forward
Melsha Messam (St. Albans, N.Y.) grabbed an offensive rebound and put back the lay-up to tie it. Assumption's Kelly Conley would miss a jumper at the buzzer, and the two teams would play a second overtime.
In the second overtime session, the green and gold scored the first three points, but the Greyhounds took over from there. Assumption scored eight straight to go up by six (74-68) before Gibbs drained a three to make it 74-71, but that would be all the Pioneers would get as the Greyhounds hit three of four free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Gibbs finished with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Senior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brookyln, N.Y.) posted her first double-double with a 16-point, 10-rebound showing. Davis recorded her second-straight double-double with 13 points and 13 boards. Messam hauled in 11 boards and chipped in six points off the bench.
Head coach
Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers are back in action on Sunday (Jan. 3) when they head to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International College in a non-conference tilt. The opening tip is slated for 3:30 p.m.
