Wrestling Splits at Minnesota State-Moorhead Tri-Match

MOORHEAD, Minn. (Dec. 4, 2015) - The LIU Post wrestling team began its visit to the Midwest on Friday with a split against Minnesota State University-Moorhead and University of Mary at Nemzek Fieldhouse.

The Pioneers (2-5) fell to the Dragons (2-1), 23-12, in a re-match of last year's Grapple at the Garden, before defeating the Marauders (2-3), 32-16, in their second contest of the evening.

In the loss to MSU, sophomore Matt Langan (Wantagh, N.Y.) got LIU Post on the board with a slight 3-2 win over freshman Dylan Connell (Center City, Minn.) at the 149-lb. weight class.

The Pioneers' three other wins came in the latter three bouts of the match. Sophomore Ronnie King (Islip, N.Y.) defeated senior Mike Urban (Lino Lakes, Minn.), 8-6, at 184 lbs.

Fellow sophomores Jake Horton (Medford, N.Y.) and James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) were victorious by respective 2-1 and 8-2 counts at the 197- and 285-lb. disciplines.

Sophomore Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) lost a hard-fought 5-4 decision to the nation's second-ranked grappler at 133, Blake Bosch (Wishek, N.D.).

LIU Post 32, Mary 16
Trailing 6-0 from the onset of the match, the Pioneers took four straight bouts to rally to a commanding 17-6 advantage. Calderone and junior Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) individually won via decision at 133 and 141 lbs. to tie the score.

Freshman T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.) put LIU Post ahead for good at 149, after pinning Noah Huff (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) at the 42-second mark of the first period.

Sophomore Corey Ashe (Patchogue, N.Y.) followed with a technical-fall victory (16-1) against Ray Young (Littleton, Colo.) at 157 to widen the green and gold's lead to 17-6.

Freshman Dan Arkow (Merrick, N.Y.) and King later added wins via pinfall at 174 and 184, respectively, to seal it for LIU Post.

Head Coach Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers close out their Midwest trip on Saturday (Dec. 5), when they compete at the Dragon Open, hosted by Minnesota State-Moorhead at 9 a.m.
