Bridgeport Upends Women's Basketball, 58-52

Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2015) - On Wednesday, the LIU Post women's basketball team lost to University of Bridgeport, 58-52, in an East Coast Conference game at the Pratt Recreation Center.

The Pioneers fall to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in ECC play. The Purple Knights improved to 3-4 overall and are now 1-0 in league action.

It was a slow start for the green in gold in the first quarter. Bridgeport scored the game's first five points before senior guard Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a jumper to put the Pioneers on the board. The Purple Knights then went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-2 lead and would bring a 13-6 lead into the first intermission.

In the second quarter, the Pioneers turned up the offense. After Bridgeport extended their lead to 11 (22-11) midway through the period, the Pioneers answered with a 10-0 run to make it a one-point game (22-21). Junior forward Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) and junior guard Simone Charles (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) drained threes during the spurt. Bridgeport responded with a 6-0 burst to re-take a seven-point lead (28-21). The visitors would bring a 30-24 lead into halftime.

In the third, back-to-back lay-ups by senior forwards Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) and Kalinka DeRoche (New Haven, Conn.) gave the Pioneers their first lead (33-32). Later in the period, senior guard Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) drained one of her three treys to make it a 37-34 game in favor of the Pioneers. Senior guard Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) went 2-for-2 from the line with just over a minute to go and LIU Post would take a 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bridgeport opened the final period on a 5-0 burst to take a 45-42 lead. Freshman guard Amber Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a jumper with just over six minute to go to make it a one-point game (45-44), but that would be as close as the Pioneers would get as Bridgeport hit 13 free throws down the stretch to seal it.

Brown finished with a career-best 17 points in 37 minutes. Davis chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.

Head coach Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers are back in action on Saturday (Dec. 12) when they host Dowling in an ECC battle in Brookville. The opening tip is slated for 1 p.m.
