Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2015) - On Wednesday, the LIU Post women's basketball team lost to University of Bridgeport, 58-52, in an East Coast Conference game at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers fall to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in ECC play. The Purple Knights improved to 3-4 overall and are now 1-0 in league action.
It was a slow start for the green in gold in the first quarter. Bridgeport scored the game's first five points before senior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a jumper to put the Pioneers on the board. The Purple Knights then went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-2 lead and would bring a 13-6 lead into the first intermission.
In the second quarter, the Pioneers turned up the offense. After Bridgeport extended their lead to 11 (22-11) midway through the period, the Pioneers answered with a 10-0 run to make it a one-point game (22-21). Junior forward
Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.) and junior guard
Simone Charles (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) drained threes during the spurt. Bridgeport responded with a 6-0 burst to re-take a seven-point lead (28-21). The visitors would bring a 30-24 lead into halftime.
In the third, back-to-back lay-ups by senior forwards
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) and
Kalinka DeRoche (New Haven, Conn.) gave the Pioneers their first lead (33-32). Later in the period, senior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) drained one of her three treys to make it a 37-34 game in favor of the Pioneers. Senior guard
Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) went 2-for-2 from the line with just over a minute to go and LIU Post would take a 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bridgeport opened the final period on a 5-0 burst to take a 45-42 lead. Freshman guard
Amber Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a jumper with just over six minute to go to make it a one-point game (45-44), but that would be as close as the Pioneers would get as Bridgeport hit 13 free throws down the stretch to seal it.
Brown finished with a career-best 17 points in 37 minutes. Davis chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.
