Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2015) - The LIU Post women's basketball team failed to hang on to a late lead Saturday afternoon, as the Pioneers lost to East Coast Conference rival Queens, 63-55, in overtime at the Pratt Recreation Center.
LIU Post (15-10, 11-6 ECC) seemed destined for a second-straight conference win, but costly turnovers down the stretch allowed Queens (18-6, 13-4 ECC) to tie the game, force the extra session and eventually defeat the Pioneers.
In a tightly-contested first half, neither side led by more than three points, until Queens grabbed a five-point edge (19-14) with five minutes to go. Madison Rowland netted two free throws to extend the Knights' lead to seven (21-14), but junior guard
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a lay-up with five seconds remaining to bring the Pioneers within three (25-22) at the break.
Junior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) led the charge for LIU Post in the opening 20 minutes. She scored eight points and brought down eight boards as the green and gold held a 24-21 rebounding advantage.
In the second half, the Pioneers came out of the gate shooting. Senior guard
Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Ratley and junior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) buried trifectas on three straight possessions to turn a 27-22 Queens lead into a 31-27 LIU Post cushion. Senior guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) then scored on a lay-up to put the green and gold up 33-27, capping an 11-0 run.
Later in the half, Brown hit another trey to give the Pioneers a nine-point lead (45-36). Subsequent back-to-back lay-ups by Ratley and Davis extended the green and gold's lead to 13 with just over six minutes to go.
Queens came all the way back though, using an 11-0 run to get within two (49-47). A pair of free throws would tie it up in the final seconds.
In overtime, the Knights opened with a 6-0 spurt, taking a 57-51 lead. After Williams knocked down two free throws to make it a four-point game (59-55), Queens scored the game's final four points to seal the 63-55 win.
Davis finished with a game-high 18 rebounds, alongside 12 points. Williams also poured in 12 points and Ratley chipped in 11.
