BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2015) - Six different players scored at least one goal Sunday to lead the No. 3 LIU Post men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win over East Coast Conference opponent Roberts Wesleyan in its 2015 home opener at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Despite giving up the game's opening goal, the Pioneers (2-0, 1-0 ECC) rattled off eight unanswered goals in the first half and brought a commanding 9-2 lead into the break. Junior attackman
Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) tallied three even-strength markers in that stretch, while senior attackman
Chris Caiazza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and junior midfielder
Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.) added two goals apiece.
In the opening 30 minutes, LIU Post outshot Roberts Wesleyan (1-2, 0-1 ECC) by a 23-9 margin and won 10-of-13 faceoffs. The Pioneers also committed just five turnovers to the Redhawks' nine.
During the second half, junior attackman
Matt Bellando (Miami, Fla.) got in on the scoring for the green and gold. He tacked on three more tallies to his five-goal showing from last Saturday against Queens (N.C.). Caiazza and junior attackman
Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) each pitched in a goal, as well, in the latter 30 minutes of play.
Bellando finished with a game-high six points, on three goals and three assists. Slane provided a five-point output (3 G, 2 A) off the bench. Caiazza collected four points (3 G, 1 A), while Beccaris and junior midfielder
Connor Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) both had three-point showings. Freshman midfielder
Kris Alvarado (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) dished out two assists in the winning effort.
Senior defenseman
Dan Jeannotte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was dominant on faceoffs, following up a season-opening 14-of-21 showing with a 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) day. Senior defenseman
Steve Gruse (New Fairfield, Conn.) caused a game-high three turnovers. Between the pipes, junior goalie
Adam Winne (Ridgefield, Conn.) made six saves to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Overall, the Pioneers owned a 38-26 advantage in shots and a 25-21 edge in ground balls. Additionally, they were 13-of-16 (81.2 percent) on clears and 2-of-4 (50.0 percent) on extra-man opportunities.

John Jez and his LIU Post squad return to action Friday (Feb. 27), when they travel to the Sunshine State to face Saint Leo in non-conference action at St. Augustine High School in St. Augustine, Fla. The opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
