Women's Basketball Outlasts Daemen, 70-65

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2015) - On a night when the LIU Post women's basketball team honored its three graduating seniors, it was junior center Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.) who turned in a career performance, as the Pioneers outlasted Daemen, 70-65, at the Pratt Recreation Center on Friday.

Davis had a career-best 20 rebounds, topping her previous career-high of 19, and coming just six shy of the LIU Post women's basketball single-game record of 26 set by Bobbi Jo Austin during the 1989-90 season. Davis also poured in 17 points for her 16th double-double of the year. Not to be outdone was senior guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.), who was playing in one of her final regular season games at home. Williams scored a game-high 29 points and brought down 11 rebounds for her first double-double of 2014-15. Williams did a lot of damage from the free-throw line, going 13-of-15 from the stripe.

The Pioneers (16-11, 12-7 ECC) scored the game's first six points in what was a back-and-forth first half. After Davis hit a lay-up to give the Pioneers a 15-9 lead, Daemen (11-14, 8-11 ECC) scored six straight points to tie it at 15-all. Later, Williams buried one of her two threes to put the Pioneers back up by six (26-20), but the Wildcats responded with a 7-0 spurt to go ahead 27-26 with 4:23 to go before the break. In the final seconds of the opening session, Daemen's Sarah Saba drained a buzzer beater, which brought the visitors within two (33-31) at the half.

Both Williams and Davis had a great showing in the first 20 minutes of action. Davis hauled in 13 boards and scored 11 points, while Williams scored 13 points and brought down nine boards. But the story in the first half were points off turnovers. LIU Post turned 12 Daemen miscues into 20 points and held a 20-4 advantage in that category. Davis' presence was also felt down low, as the green and gold outscored the Wildcats, 18-10, in the paint.

In the second half, Daemen came out of the gate strong and took the lead shortly after halftime. The Wildcats eventually led by as many as four points (44-40), but the Pioneers used the three-ball to re-take the lead. With Daemen ahead 50-49, senior guard Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drained a trifecta to put the green and gold up by two (52-50). Then, with the Wildcats leading 59-58, junior guard Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) knocked down a trey of her own to give LIU Post a two-point cushion.

Later, with just over three minutes to go in regulation, sophomore guard Essence Casey (Huntington Station, N.Y.) hit a lay-up to give the Pioneers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Castle finished with nine points, while Casey added six in her first start in 16 games.

The Pioneers conclude the 2014-15 regular season at home on Sunday (Mar. 1) against Roberts Wesleyan. The opening tip is slated for noon, and the game can be seen live on CBS Sports Network.
