BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2015) - The LIU Post women's basketball team concluded the 2014-15 regular season with a nationally-televised 69-61 win over Roberts Wesleyan on CBS Sports Network at the Pratt Recreation Center on Sunday.
The Pioneers (17-11, 13-7 ECC) were led by senior guards
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) and
Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.). Williams led all scorers with 25 points. She also dished out seven assists and brought down five rebounds. Davis posted her 17th double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. The junior was 7-of-8 from the floor in one of her best shooting performances of the season. Castle added 16 points and eight boards in 33 minutes of action.
For most of the first half, it looked like LIU Post would run away with this one. Midway through the first 20 minutes, Davis netted a lay-up to give the Pioneers a 10-point cushion (18-8). The green and gold soon widened their lead to a game-high 17 (28-11), before Roberts Wesleyan (20-6, 15-5 ECC) closed out the half on a 8-0 run. The Pioneers carried a seven-point edge into the break (30-23).
Williams and Davis both had 11 points in the opening session. Castle added seven points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard
Essence Casey (Huntington Station, N.Y.) had six boards.
In the second half, it was a different ball game. After Davis hit a jay with just over 15 minutes to go in the half to give the Pioneers a 15-point lead (42-27), the Redhawks went on an 8-0 burst to get within six (42-36). Then, with just over nine minutes to go, Roberts Wesleyan's Lucy Covley hit one of her four three-pointers to bring the Redhawks within one (49-48). Later in the half, with LIU Post up by three, junior guard
Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) drained a deep three to put the Pioneers up by six (56-50).
The Redhawks would threaten again, getting within one at 58-57, but solid free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the victory for the Pioneers. Castle and Williams combined to go 6-for-6 from the stripe with under a minute on the clock.
Casey finished with eight rebounds, seven points and five assists. Brown chipped in two big threes to finish with six points, two rebounds and two assists.
