LANTANA, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2015) - The LIU Post baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit Tuesday to defeat Bloomfield, 6-4, to pick up its first win of the 2015 season.
The Pioneers (1-4) pounded out 15 hits and used a two-run seventh and a four-run eighth to come away with the victory.
After a scoreless first inning, Bloomfield (0-1) scored a run in each of the next four, taking a 4-0 advantage after five frames.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning, third baseman
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) smacked a one-out double and left-fielder
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) followed with a triple that scored Tolan. Then, right-fielder
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) beat out an infield single that allowed Iacono to cross the plate. Maccarone would advance to second thanks to a throwing error by the Bears' third baseman. With the Pioneers threatening, Bloomfield was able to get out of the jam, still holding a two-run lead.
In the eighth, catcher
Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.) led off with a walk. After Asbaty advanced all the way to third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, first baseman
David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) singled through the left side, scoring Asbaty, making it 4-3. With one out, second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) smacked a double to left center that scored pinch runner
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.), tying the game at 4-all.
Maccarone followed with a two-run single to center, giving the Pioneers a 6-4 lead they would never relinquish.
Relief pitcher
Dillon Burke (Plainview, N.Y.) tossed four scoreless innings. The lefty allowed one hit, one walk and struck out four to pick up his first win as a Pioneer.
