Box Score 2 TAMPA, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2015) - On Tuesday, the 10th-ranked LIU Post softball team commenced the 2015 campaign at Tampa with two closely-fought losses to the Spartans. Tampa earned the win in the opener by a 1-0 final, while the Pioneers were defeated 3-1 in the nightcap.
The home squad secured the victory in Game One as they produced a tally from eight hits. Tampa (14-7) sophomore Bre Setree's single helped Alex Walton cross the plate to give the Spartans a one-run lead that proved sufficient. Defensively, senior hurler Julia Marrow threw a perfect game for Tampa.
Pioneers' (0-2) senior pitcher
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) delivered eight strikeouts through 23 batters faced, as she controled the circle for six innings.
Although Game Two saw a fourth inning two-run lead for the Spartans, the Pioneers rallied in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game within a score. Sophomore
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) fueled the green and gold offense with a lead-off double to center field.
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) advanced Peet to third on a sacrifice bunt, and
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) drew a walk off a wild pitch, which passported Peet across the plate.
Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) combined for two strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and his LIU Post squad return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 11), when they face Florida Southern at 6 and 8 p.m. in Lakeland.
