DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2015) - The LIU Post baseball team secured its first East Coast Conference series win on Tuesday, defeating Mercy, 7-1, at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry.

Sophomore pitcher Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) dominated the Mavericks (4-10, 1-3 ECC), tossing eight innings of one-run, seven-strikeout ball. The righty also scattered four hits and allowed four walks to earn his first win of 2015.

Mercy got on the board first after Bryan Greig tripled home a run, but it was all LIU Post (5-5, 3-1 ECC) after that.

In the top of the second, junior outfielder John Bellock (Glen Cove, N.Y.) put the Pioneers on the scoreboard with a game-tying RBI single.

Then, in the fourth, red-shirt senior outfielder Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) reached on an error that allowed junior infielder Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) to score, giving the green and gold a lead they never relinquished.

In the sixth, junior shortstop Rick Alessi (St. James, N.Y.) tacked on some insurance with an RBI single to right, plating sophomore Thomas Asbaty (Randolph, N.J.).

Later, in the eighth, sophomore outfielder Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) ripped an RBI single to make it a 4-1 contest.

In the ninth, junior first baseman David Groeneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) singled home graduate outfielder Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.), before Bowers produced an RBI groundout and Alessi knocked in Groeneveld to cap the scoring.

Junior Dillon Burke (Plainview, N.Y.) tossed a perfect bottom of the ninth to seal the win. The lefty has now thrown seven consecutive scoreless innings in relief.

Iacono and Maccarone each collected three hits. Daley, Bowers and Alessi all had two-hit games. Alessi drove in two runs as well to lead the offense.

Head Coach Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers are back in action on Friday (Mar. 27), when they open a four-game set with ECC rival Molloy. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. from Uniondale.
