BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 25, 2015) - Highlighted by two Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) blasts over the left field fence, the LIU Post softball team swept Mercy College, 8-0 and 3-1, in an East Coast Conference twinbill at the LIU Post Softball Complex on Wednesday.

The Pioneers got off to an early start in the opening contest, as Dzierzynski sent a longball over the bleachers in left field to give the green and gold a one-run advantage. The second inning saw freshman shortstop Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) double to left center to score sophomore first baseman Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.), while junior Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) added her own homer in the fourth to the LIU Post offensive effort. In the fifth, the Pioneers tacked on four more runs, as a Dzierzynski single scored seniors Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.), sophomore left fielder Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and a McCoy sacrifice fly drove Dzierzynski home. Freshman pinch hitter Emily DeVito (Preston, Conn.) secured the 8-0 victory in the sixth with a walk-off single to left center.

Sophomore hurler Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) was credited with the six-inning shutout, to improve her 2015 campaign to a 4-1 mark.

Game Two against the Mavericks (1-12) commenced with another Dzierzynski blast in the bottom of the first, but Mercy evened the score in the top of the second frame. The stalemate remained until junior Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) reached on a fielders choice to score Miller in the third, while the bottom of the fourth saw another DeVito RBI that put the Pioneers up by two. Due to inherent weather conditions, the game was called and LIU Post clinched the 3-1 victory.

Junior pitcher Isabella Corrao (Farmingdale, N.Y.) threw five frames and fanned two through her effort in the circle.

Head Coach Jamie Apicella and LIU Post softball is set to compete in an ECC matchup against Dowling College on Saturday, Mar. 28, in Brookhaven, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
