BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2015) - The LIU Post men's lacrosse team will close out the month of March as the seventh-ranked team in the country, according to Monday's USILA and Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Division II polls.
The Pioneers (9-1, 5-0 ECC) are unbeaten in their last five contests, including two wins over the previous week. On Wednesday (Mar. 25), the squad proved that the better "Post" in men's lacrosse resides on Long Island by defeating Post, 15-9, in Waterbury, Conn. Then, on Saturday (Mar. 28), junior attackman and reigning ECC Player of the Week
Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) led an offensive onslaught that resulted in a 19-5 beatdown of conference opponent Dominican. Beccaris collected a career-high eight goals and 10 points in the Pioneer victory.
LIU Post may be holding serve in the most recent tallies, but the next opponent for the green and gold has come back to Earth slightly after rocketing up the polls. No. 5 Merrimack dropped three places after losing its first contest over the past seven days, falling to conference foe Le Moyne. The Warriors (6-1, 5-1 NE-10) visit Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium on Saturday (Apr. 4), with the opening faceoff set for noon.
Both the USILA and Nike/LM ledgers boast the same seven teams atop the rankings, with Lake Erie enjoying its second week at the No. 1 position. Defending national champion Limestone, which lost to Lake Erie this season, is slotted second, with Le Moyne leaping to third following the Dolphins' victory over Merrimack. Northern Boulevard rival NYIT claims the fourth overall position with the Warriors slightly ahead of Long Island rival Adelphi. LIU Post is just behind the Panthers, who represent the only loss on the schedule so far for the green and gold.
Saturday's contest in Brookville between No. 7 LIU Post and No. 5 Merrimack will also serve as the third-annual "Team Connor Day" celebration. The Pioneers will be raising awareness for pediatric cancer research, with honorary co-captains Connor Bradley and Sal Trotta, who are both being treated at The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital. The cause has raised over $13,000 since the inaugural event took place in 2013.
