Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Mar. 9, 2015) - Trailing 11-6 late in the third quarter, the No. 2 LIU Post men's lacrosse team rallied to make it a one-goal game, but came up short in a 13-11 loss to third-ranked Adelphi Monday at Motamed Field.
The Pioneers (4-1), behind the tandem of
Connor Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) and
Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.), closed the gap to 11-10 with 11:57 left in regulation. Drost accounted for three of the goals in the comeback attempt, two of which occurred in a stint of 1:01. Berardis scored an unassisted tally and dished off a helper in the process.
Junior attackman Salvatore Tuttle (Farmingdale, N.Y.) answered though for the Panthers (4-0), sneaking a shot past LIU Post junior goalie
Adam Winne (Ridgefield, Conn.) at the 10:13 mark. Fellow junior attackman
Anthony DeLuca (West Islip, N.Y.) tacked on an insurance goal with 3:58 remaining to put the game away.
Between the pipes, senior goalie D.J. Mauro (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was tall to the task in the second half, stopping seven of the 12 shots he faced. In the fourth quarter alone, Mauro sprawled to make four saves in six attempts.
The green and gold opened the game strong, netting the first two goals in a span of 1:12. Again, it was Berardis and Drost who provided the scoring for the Pioneers.
Adelphi, however, responded with four unanswered tallies to go up 4-2 in the final minutes of the opening quarter. The Panthers would eventually bring a two-goal lead (8-6) into the intermission.
Drost collected a game-high six goals on the afternoon. Berardis totaled three goals and an assist for a four-point showing. Junior attackman
Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) added a goal and a helper.
Defensively, senior
Matt Scalera (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) scooped up five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Senior
Justin Woodley (Bloomington, Minn.) amassed four ground balls and one caused turnover. Winne turned aside a game-best 16 shots in the cage.
The two squads were even on faceoffs, as LIU Post and Adelphi both went 13-for-26. Individually, senior
Dan Jeannotte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was 12-for-24 on draws.

John Jez and the Pioneers return to action on Saturday (Mar. 14), when they begin a three-game homestand at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium against No. 10/11 Molloy. The opening faceoff is set for noon.
