BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2015) - Highlighed by senior catcher
Aly Dzierzynski's (Deer Park, N.Y.) 49th career blast, the LIU Post softball team secured two East Coast Conference victories over Dowling, 1-0 and 3-1, at the LIU Post Softball Complex on Sunday.
It was only fitting that Dzierzynski's record-breaker fell during the Pioneer's inagural Make-A-Wish day, as the senior captain has close ties with the organization who granted her a wish back in 2008.
The commencing contest proved to be pitcher's duel, as the game remained scoreless through six and a half frames. The green and gold (18-7) secured a tally and the one-run victory in the bottom of the seventh, after a
Mackenzie Buckley (St. James, N.Y.) walk-off single scored
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.).
Sophomore hurler
Ashley Martin (Long Beach, N.Y.) commanded the circle for the Pioneers, allowing the Golden Lions (13-20-1) just three hits through the shutout. She collected six strikeouts in a seven inning showing, improving her mark to 9-2 through the 2015 campaign.
The latter game saw early LIU Post offense, as freshman shortstop
Jaclyn Hahn (Bayport, N.Y.) singled to the shortstop in the second to help
Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) cross the plate and give the green and gold a one-run advantage. Dzierzynski's memorable two-run dinger to dead center cushioned the green and gold lead and earned her the LIU Post institution record for career homeruns. Solid defense throughout helped the Pioneers to a 3-1 win.
Senior
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) struck-out four and walked just one. She boasts a 5-2 record through 46 total innings.
Head Coach
Jamie Apicella and LIU Post softball returns to the field Tuesday, Apr. 14, when they are set to travel to Bridgeport, Conn. to face ECC opponent Bridgeport. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
