BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2015) - On Thursday, the LIU Post baseball team came away with its third-straight win, defeating non-conference foe Dominican, 4-3, at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville.
Senior pitcher
Mike Curti (Oceanside, N.Y.), who was making his first career start, ran into some trouble early. Dominican (10-16) managed to strike first in the opening frame, but the Pioneers (13-10) responded.
After red-shirt senior third baseman
Tom Tolan (Malverne, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the first with a single and took second on a fielding error by the Chargers' left fielder, red-shirt senior outfielder
Rich Maccarone's (Glen Cove, N.Y.) run-scoring fielder's choice tied it at 1-all. Later, junior second baseman
Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled to right, plating Maccarone to put LIU Post in front.
Then, in the bottom of the second, the Pioneers used timely hitting to pull away. With the bases loaded and two outs, Maccarone smacked a two-run double down the right-field line, scoring Tolan and freshman outfielder
Rob Andreoli (North Wantagh, N.Y.), making it 4-1.
That would be all the offense Curti needed, as the senior tossed five innings, scattered five hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out two. From there, sophomore
James Long (Oceanside, N.Y.), junior
James Dromm (Glen Head, N.Y.),
freshman
Vinny Ruggiero (Plainview, N.Y.) and red-shirt senior
Connor McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) closed it out.
Long pitched a perfect sixth, before Dromm struck out two in a one-two-three seventh. The Chargers touched up Ruggiero for a run on one hit in the eighth, but McCarthy retired the side in order in the ninth to earn the save.
Tolan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in his first action since Mar. 22. Maccarone was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Bowers also collected two hits in four turns with an RBI.
Head Coach
Mike Gaffney and the Pioneers return to action on Friday (Apr. 17), when they open a crucial four-game set with East Coast Conference rival Bridgeport in West Haven, Conn. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
